The difference in sound.

Finally got around to recording what the car sounds like without overloading the iPhone's mic yesterday.

I removed the muffler this morning to see if the BRAAP sound was caused by the muffler; 3-2 header + 2.5" straight pipe is loud... like nascar loud...

Around the Town

Accidentally ran over a squirrel, and had someone comment on my "cute underwear;" all in all though it was fun.

A few updates on the automobile front

Found out that one of the welds on the header was causing a exhaust leak; so I am heading back to the shop later this week to have it replaced. It will suck because that means I have to remove it from the car and drive a couple of hours to get it done, but it will be awesome because I will finally be able to hear my carbs and full growl that much better!

My brakes were giving me some issues; in so that as I would drive the brakes would slowly start to sieze to the rotor. With a lot of trial and error, and a question posed to the knowledgeable,  I found out that I had adjusted the push rod in the vacuum booster too far out and the master cylinder wasn't returning to dead stop. After a quite a few MC pulls and measurements I have finally got it all sorted out.

The 240sx coil-over conversion sleeves have been shipped from Canada, and should arrive within the next couple of weeks, which means that I'll be slammed as I can be within a month!

Finally finished the wiring diagram for the car; although I may add another relay for the sound circuit, so it too can ground switched.

WIRING DIAGRAM rev12 routed

And tomorrow I am going to drive around the more scenic areas of the area and see if I can finally steal a couple of good shots of the car before I put it on jack stands and flush the break-in fluids.

Oh, and I finally felt comfortable enough with the status of the car to put the greatness on its rear window

Blasphemous thoughts & actions

There is a mindset about the music elitists that you should never shuffle your music, and rightfully so. When you are actively listening to music you really need to be listening to the whole album to understand what the artist is trying to portrait to their audience. The downside to listening to music in this fashion is that it removes the chaos out of life, and what kind of life is that?

I haven’t been on the look out for new music like I was a couple years ago, and due to this I have just been listening to Julian Casablancas, She & Him, Pete Doherty, Kanye West, and The XX on constant repeat. Then one morning while I was working on my car, I threw the trusty iPod on shuffle and let it do the music finding. About 5 or 6 tracks into the shuffle I heard a song that was extremely familiar, but could not place from where. The song was “From the Stars” and the band is called White Lies.

To be completely honest, I really have no idea when I added this album to my library but I am glad that I did. The main thing that I love about this album is that it reminds me of Joy Division, and I don’t like Joy Division. That’s right I don’t like Joy Division, deal with it. To me, Joy Division is like having sex but not finishing; yes it feels good but at the end of it all you are just disappointed. So why do I like White Lies? Because there actually feels like a finish; with a bit of early Morrissey thrown in just to make it that much better.

I still don’t know where I heard this song from, but thanks to adding a bit of chaos to my life I have a new band to listen to on constant repeat.

I’m in your streets, making noises…

So as started last night this morning was the first time that the car has been taken to the steets. Well not really, but I am calling it the first due to it not having any issues with overheating or dying; technically first time out with triples and headersexhaust though

In your streets

A few whistles, hoots, and smiling waves later I sit at my usual spot; only now I am waiting for the blokes who park out in front to leave so that I can swoop in and actually watch my car. And strangely enough, someone is doing that right now! Not really a vain action, more of a safety issue… ok fine, kinda vain.

It has been 4 months (dec 15th purchase date) since I have had the pleasure/pain of working on such a cult of a car. While I have talked about the grime a bit, it has become something of a normalcy again. Where my hands were once filled with keyboards and mice they have now been replaced with wrenches and ratchets. Just a short couple years ago I could have cared less about what I drove; the car became a box that took me to work instead of something that I love to be in. Thanks to this car, and the free time, the 240z has brought me back to what I like to do; making things work.

brap.

We were having issues last weekend with the engine being temperamental, and figured that it was due to my use of points. So we went out and I picked up a GM HEI ignition module, new coil, and attempted to wire it up following the standard method. Unfortunately it wouldn't start up, at all. I was using plubers tape, and zip-ties to hold it in place, so I knew that the issue was due to the module not grounding correctly.

So I I went down to the hardware store this morning and picked up a 3" L bracket at about 1/8" thick, some boltsnutswashers, and some electrical tape. I got back to the house and with the help of a ball-peen hammer, and a drill I was able to flatten the bracket out and drill a new hole so that it would gourd to the chassis well.

After that I plugged everything back in, and brraaapppp; she started right up. I waited for the engine to get warm, and then started to tune the idle. The carbs are pulling 3.5-4 on the synchrometer, idle screws are out 3/4 of a turn, and she is idling at 650rpm. With this news in my mind tank I took Dsalni's advice and cut my fenders an inch-ish in the front so that the tyres would no longer rub; this way I can actually turn.

Took her for a quick spin, and zombie barbecue... nearly puts the 7 to shame! Tomorrow I will be taking her out into the real world of stop and go with coffee and cigarettes, so we will see how it is really doing.

First shots without a tent
First shots without a tent

I played with these RAW pictures with Photoshop, and as a consequence don't really like them. The first shot looks as if it from a video game, and the second..... eeehhh I dunno. Yes I know I was shooting in the direction of the sun, but I was hoping to get more of a flash than a complete washout. Oh well, tomorrow is a day filled with the car on the road in a location other than in front of the garage.

However there are still a couple of things that I need to work out before I rip the wiring out of the car...

-Figure out why the brake pedal is as hard as a rock. It is either that the brake master cylinder isnt getting the vacuum it needs, which is doubtful; or that the 15/16th brake master cylinder that I just picked up at the junkyard needs to be re-built.

-Tach doesn't seem to like to go above 5k rpm, but I am pretty sure there is some resister that i need to add.

- E-Brake needs adjusting.

-till next time, and hopefully with some better pictures.

first tones of of the webers

Had a chance to get my running webers caught on cam; so here she sounds

(sorry for the overloaded sound, once she is running in top condition I'll get a better one).

Every now and then she would throw a hissy fit and start to backfire/sputter. I figured that the original points ignition couldn't keep up, and am in the process of swapping to a GM HEI ignition module.

Shiny partseses

It took a bit of time, but the 26mm velocity stacks for the webers finally arrived at the house. Now that they are mounted in the car I will start tuning the carbs so that I can drive it around while I start to make the new wiring harness!

Also this weekend was 1/2 off parts in the junkyard so I picked up a 78 amp 12si alternator, as well as a wiper motor off of a 91 civic.

figures as much...

Was able to pick up the headers, exhaust, and syncrometer from MSA yesterday, and so I took pictures of the un-boxing and initial install.

Header and Exhaust install
Header and Exhaust install

While I was removing the stock exhaust i broke a bolt, the one right under the thermostat housing, so I had to remove the housing to pit some vice grips around it and get it off that way. It broke again... then I pulled out my easy-out set drilled a hole and tapped the bit in; then the easy-out bit broke off inside the twice sheered bolt... So I drilled another pilot hole and just decided to drill out the opening. Then my bit broke inside of the bolt... after 2 breaks in the bolt, a snapped easy-out, and a broken drill bit I was finally able to clear the bolt out and re-tap the hole.

Then while putting on the header I ran into a clearance issue with, what seems like, part of the heat shield. With some massaging I was able to get it to fit without it touching.

Header and Exhaust install

The header flange was a bit bowed, but that will straighten out when then nuts get tightened down, and it seems that I am running into a clearance issue with the cannon intake manifold. I bought some new studs to put into the top intake threads to see if I can squeeze it on there, instead of having to grind down too much of the flange.
